The Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/17/2020 following a complaint made to the Department by a member of the public. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Taco Tico in Topeka on Topeka BLVD was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Kansas food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 3 violations were found.
The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:
- In the walk in cooler there was a metal pan of shredded cheese covered with plastic wrap. There was a hole in the plastic wrap and five rodent droppings in the cheese. The cheese had been shredded and placed in the container on 2/16. Corrected on site (COS)–cheese was voluntarily discarded.
- In the walk in cooler there was a metal container of cooked rice with no date marking. Employee said the rice was prepared on 2/13. COS–rice was date marked.
- Rodent droppings were observed in a pan of shredded cheese in the walk in cooler, and in a case of unopened cartons of sour cream in the walk in cooler. Nesting materials were observed on the floor in the southwest corner of the kitchen at the base of the walk in cooler wall. Establishment is serviced by a licensed pest control operator. Last treatment was 2/13; invoice shows operator noted no rodent activity.
