Sonic Drive Thru in Mission bumbles inspection; 6 violations following complaint from the public

Kansas Department of Agriculture’s (KDA) food safety and lodging program conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 3/11/2020 following a complaint from the public. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the SONIC #2677 was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Kansas food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 6 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • At the topping bar, four rotten bananas were being stored. Corrected on site (COS) = Bananas discarded
  • At the refrigerated prep table (RPT), one container of cheese was holding at 59.5F. The container had been out since 6:30am per Person in charge (PIC). Cheese was sitting on top of other food in RPT out of refrigeration. Picture taken at approximately 9:30am. COS – Cheese moved to cooler for rapid chill. At the toppings bar the reach in cooler had an ambient temperature of 50.9F per min/max. The following foods and temperature were being held in the reach in cooler: Whipped topping – 55.1F Milk – 51.4F Cookie dough – 50.7F Cold brew coffee (dairy) – 47.9F All products had been in cooler overnight. COS = All items discarded
  • At the toppings bar, the following items were being stored as clean with visible food debris/residue: one metal pan, one pitcher and one container with assorted utensils COS = All items moved to dish
  • The drain located under the soda dispenser is backed up and has a puddle of standing water. PIC has already contact maintenance to fix drain. Not corrected
  • The cook line sanitizer bucket was being stored next to and in contact with the RTE tortilla container under the prep table. COS = Sanitizer bucket moved
  • The first aid kit is being stored on the wall directly over multiple racks of RTE buns. First aid is supplied with multiple toxic products. not corrected
